Prepare to launch into productivity!
In 4 direct steps we built on our original ideas for art making. By the end of this 2.5hr workshop we each had sourced inspiration and had begun to develop a methodology for art making. Lots of peer-to-peer conversation led to the blossoming of truly exciting artistic concepts!
Concept building meant we were to set a goal, create a deadline (not fixed yet) and get ready for creating.. We are now a studious bunch of artists working towards a exhibiting as a group in a local gallery. Watch this space!
This workshop is summarized in a couple of words.. FINGER PAINTING!
The paints, inks and were mediums out with the intention to experiment with colour which, as forecast, was a lot of fun! Taking our cues from Max Ernst, we toyed with automatic techniques and decalcomania; especially it’s pronounciation.. The results were extremely interesting and stylistically varied with different colour combinations, patterns and textures.
We hoped to encourage automatic, improvised and experimental attitudes towards art making through Creative Expression and looking at the results we are really pleased with the response and output from everyone involved. Perhaps we will create a giant automatic collage with the many left over pieces from the Fright Fight Flight storeroom/cubicle?
After a wet week, we were all pleased to be able to commune in the car park in the fading light, to play in one of Bec’s rainbow labyrinths. Perhaps the 12-person-labyrinth-run is not the best way to experience the full meditative value of labyrinths, but we had plenty of giggles and all felt much elated afterwards.
BIG thanks to Paul and Izaac for modeling/sitting/being totally sketchogenic!
The room had a wonderful air of artistic intent. We shall post our drawings very soon…
Backtrack to September 8 and the Fright Fight Flight crew were launching into their first week of practical art making skills. The Art Grasp Crash Course is designed to enable new-comers to art a firm foundation to build a creative practice; and also to provide opportunities and skills for emerging artists in the local scene. We have been having a great turn out at the weekly workshops and we would like to thank everyone for making the effort to come along!
In Week One we spilled ‘theory ‘. These were all the secrets and rules of visual art and design- thanks to facilitator Petra for sharing her comprehensive understanding of the elements & principles of design! We hope our stand-up comedy wasn’t too awful and that you guys took note (of our jokes)??
The drawings, photographed by the lovely Rebecca Anne Lee, show the participants’ experiments with THE #1 SKILL- Contour Drawing. As we love to say- this is the most fun way to draw, and helps you to SEE and DRAW objectively. Lots of fun was had as we drew others in the class, still life objects and forks, cameras, gadgets and whatever we could get our eyes on.
Elements of design- don’t forget it.

Sketches by classmates.
On Thursday we played with the FFF Gocco printer at Craft 2: Sewing + Print Gocco- making single colour postcard prints from hand-drawn sketches. Come to FFF this week to make bamboo frames and Gocco prints on calico and paper.. Hey, print your t-shirts if want to!
Gocco printing is a colour screen printing system that looks like and is fun like a toy! Check out the save gocco blog with comprehensive Gocco need to knows.

Here’s the photos from last week:
Thursday nights at the Lorikeet Centre are now (and for the next 9 wks) the hub of visual art skills workshops with Fright Fight Flight.
Last week kicked off with a 2.5 hour sketchbook binding ‘How To..’ A handful of curious and creative individuals came to find out how to recycle old hardcover literature and scrap cartridge paper into an artists’ sketchbook/visual diary.
Many thanks to eveyone who came along to share the space, and the team who help to make the night happen. You guys shred! Also big ups to Propel Youth Arts and Healthway for their support for this event.
